Whittier International - a Historic Landmark

Built in 1882, Whittier is a designated Historic Landmark, Colorado's oldest continuously operating school. The original Pine Street School was renamed for poet John Greenleaf Whittier, after he wrote back to student Effie Titus, an early Boulder 6th grader, who was in love with his poem, "Snowbound.

An International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program "Where the world meets in the heart of Boulder."

Whittier offers a wonderful array of unique programs:


  • IB/PYP provides all students with an internationally recognized, rigorous course of study including inquiry-based learning, character education, and exposure to Spanish as a world language.
  •  YMCA before and after school care is available on site from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a sliding fee scale.
  • Three English Language Development teachers provide additional English language instruction for students not yet proficient in academic English.
  • A Talent and Gifted educational advisor identifies gifted children and helps teachers provide individualized plans of instruction to challenge them.
  • Literacy teachers  provide Leveled Literacy Intervention or Reading Recovery as targeted, small-group or individual reading instruction to students who need specialized instruction.
  • Two Special Education teachers work with identified students to support classroom content and strategies instruction.
  • Instrumental music is open to any fifth-grade student who wishes to learn to play an instrument.
  • A school district social worker, district-funded counselors, and FRS therapist facilitate in-class discussions as well as small group and individual sessions related to student needs.
  • Three computer labs ensure all students access and training in the use of technology.
  • Physical education, music and art programs enhance students’ abilities to express themselves in diverse  ways. The arts are seen as essential to child development.
  • As a Family Resource School (FRS), Whittier supports the needs of families through an FRS Family Outreach Coordinator and our FRS therapist.
