Whittier International Elementary is currently working towards a plan to improve our K-2 playground, with assistance from a GOCO Great Outdoors School Yard Initiative Grant. The basis of this project is a student-led initiative to create a new playground space based on Universal Access Design (UAD) - creating a new neighborhood playground that provides recreational opportunities for all, inclusive of all needs, including of school and community members who are "differently-abled" or who have "invisible differences."

Want to learn more? Email Kaley Feenstra at kaley.feenstra@bvsd.org to learn more about the project between Growing Up Boulder and Whittier English Language Learner Students.

Want to help? Whittier must cover the remaining balance of the playground cost that is not covered by GOCO.

We are proud to share that we were recognized by the Colorado Department of Education for the newly formed Families and Educators Together (FET) team's work last year.  This team of parents and staff chose to focus on Sharing Power from the 6 CDE Partnership Standards. The team supported staff efforts to incorporate more communication with families including having a representative FET team to share their opinions, moving to the Seesaw platform online K-5, increasing Home Visits and focusing extra calls or communication efforts on families we knew less well. Thank you to our Families and Educators Team for this great work!

BVSD is partnering once again with EcoCycle to do their annual used shoe drive, which will take place September 30 to October 4.  Drop off boots, sandals, athletic and dress shoes tied or banded together.  Please no cleats, flip flops, Crocs, muddy, ripped or torn shoes.  Please no plastic or paper bags.  Collection boxes will be out at school all week.  Our goal for the district is to divert 2,000 pounds of used shoes from landfills and donate them to communities in need.

1st-5th grade families, you must login to your Infinite Campus Portal to complete required paperwork (the ADU process for everyone and Free and Reduced Lunch applications if applicable).

Remember that you do not need to go out and purchase school supplies! Grades K-5 are requesting cash donations on our website at this link: Whittier School Supplies or given directly to your child’s teacher. Children should come with a backpack, water bottle and, if needed, a lunch box.  Backpacks are available starting August 5th during office hours for those who need them.

We look forward to a wonderful year with all of you!  We hope that together we can achieve our IB vision: as civically-engaged community members, we can all improve our world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Check out the article in the Daily Camera about our librarian Loran Lattes and the fifth-grade teachers who together developed a project that involved students researching and creating a life-sized human body.

Students coded using Scratch, connected circuits using Makey Makey microprocessor boards and built the bodies using cardboard and craft supplies. Then they recorded information about the body’s systems that’s shared when parts of the display are pressed.

To make the project happen, Lattes used a $1,185 grant from Impact on Education to buy a class set of Makey Makey kits that now will be used for school other projects.

“There was such high engagement,” she said. “They will remember information better having built something than just having researched it.”

Join us on the field after school to participate in a series of fun bike obstacles. The purpose of a Bike Rodeo is to prepare children to safely operate their bicycles in neighborhoods and on the streets. It does this by first helping the child to recognize their responsibility as an operator of a vehicle and second teach them skills to assess risks and hazards and react appropriately in a number of simulated scenarios. Most importantly, it is critical that the riders not only learn, but also have fun! Bicycles and helmets will be available to borrow.

Date: April 19th, 2019
What: Bike Rodeo
When: 2:45pm- 4:15pm
Where: Whittier International Elementary Field
Who: All grades are welcome! Parent's need to be present and sign a permission slip for their child to enter the course.

Also,   BVSD Bike to School Week is April 22-26, 2019.

Join students, teachers and staff for this year's Bike Week and Bike to School Day! Get out in the sun, breathe some fresh air and enjoy riding your bike to school!

Remember to register here for Bike to School Day, Wednesday, April 24th, 2019!

This year, we raised $31,500 of our $30,000 pledge drive goal!! If you didn’t get a chance to donate to the pledge drive, don’t worry. You can support education and enrichment at our school through the rest of the year by:

  • Joining Whittier Nights Out. Eat out at participating restaurants, and a portion of what you pay goes to the PTA. Nice way to catch up with other Whittier families too.

  • Volunteering. There are lots of fun events coming up that need help from parents: the Garden Tour, Carnival, potlucks, book swap, IB Running, summer garden maintenance. Sign up at HelpAtSchool or email whittierintpta@gmail.com.
